Well, after receiving a call from Steve and already having the day booked off work we decided to try a spot of Roach fishing.
I dusted off the match rods, swung by a local tackle shop for a pint of maggots and headed to a little pond in search of a infamous silver fish.
The walk was a bit longer than I remembered but it was a nice day and it was good to be getting out and doing something different.
After setting up we fed a few maggots and Steve was into the fish almost straight away picking up a surprise Brown Trout. I was a bit slower off the mark missing the first few knocks but eventually swung my first little Roach into the keepnet.
Steves second Brown Trout. Beautiful little fish.
We were feeding little and often but the bites were coming in patches with steady takes then drying off before another shoal moved in.
My float ready to dive.
The rumours of big Roach seemed to be just rumours with the majority being no more than a few ounces but they provided a few hours sport and considering that the last time I wet a line in this pond was during the 90's we managed a pretty nice mixed bag.
Our mixed haul, not bad for a few hours.
I think that maybe we'll give it another go on the run up to winter, who knows maybe I'm wrong and we'll get to see a big Roach. I don't think it really matters if they are just rumours as its nice to get a chance to dust off the match rods and I don't think I'll leave it so long next time.
